Get Off The Island

By Djuamiel Huff

Brothers, are you trapped on 3 Block Island, and have been there so long that you have a 3 Block Island mentality? Some brothers are no caught up in the H.O.O.D (Hazardous Obstacles Of Destruction), that all of their movements are limited to a 3 block radium.

On block #1 is his Mama’s house, and this is where half of his clothes are kept. On block #2 is where his Baby mama’s house is, and this is where the rest of his clothes are kept. He sleeps between these two houses and he has a video game system that he carries in a backpack from house to house. On block #3 is the drug house where he buys or sells his drugs. Within these 3 blocks there is a neighborhood market, liquor stores and fast food joints where he buys his food, drink, blunts, white tees and other knock-off gear.

His only media outlets are MTV, BET, and VH1. In his mind, rappers run the world and if a book or magazine doesn’t have a rapper or big butt female on the cover, it’s not worthy of being read. As time goes on he exists as a modern-day Neanderthal and develops the mindset that everything right is wrong, and everything wrong is right. He is a walking dead man, and if he is lucky he will end up in a rescue vehicle (a police car or an ambulance) and be taken to a house of healing (prison or a hospital) where he will have time to think and assess his life. With all of the free information that’s available to anyone via the internet or the public library, this brother is not a victim, but a volunteer. He is not perishing for a lack of Gucci, a lack of Prada, or a lack of Cartier – – he is perishing for a lack of knowledge. The only difference between this lost brother and Gilligan is that Gilligan wanted to be rescued from his Island!
